both values of y are smaller than 3 so quantity B is greater.

Explanation

If ($$y - 1)(y + 5) = 0$$, $$(y - 1) = 0$$ or $$(y + 5) = 0$$. So, y could be 1 or –5. Thus, Quantity B is greater.
