Question Stats:

66% (01:07) correct 33% (01:45) wrong based on 18 sessions
I've come across a question on mygretutor that I don't know how to start. Here it is:

x is the denominator when 0.375 is expressed as a fraction in its lowest terms, and y is the denominator when 0.3125 is expressed as a fraction in its lowest terms.

 Quantity A Quantity B X Y

A) Quantity A is greater.
B) Quantity B is greater.
C) The two quantities are equal.
D) The relationship cannot be determined from the information given.

It seems like there are an infinite possibilities for the values of x and y that would meet those criteria, and I thought the answer would be Cannot be determined, but that's incorrect. How can I work backwards from the answer? Is that possible?

Explanation.

The key word here is fraction expressed in its lowest terms

So $$0.375 = \frac{375}{1000}=\frac{3}{8}$$ So x =8.

Again $$0.3125 = \frac{3125}{10000}=\frac{5}{16}$$ So y =16.

Hence y is greater. Thus Option B is correct

We need only the value of denominator. As Sandy shows, I want to add that after making to its lowest fraction compare only denominator.
