To solve this, one must take it as a reading problem by finding out what exactly is Scruton's idea.
Here, [S's idea] = [tradition at the (i)] = [without genius] = [not classical vernacular] because "Scruton gives a critical appraisal of the classical vernacular". The second sentence further explained S's idea by rejecting [extravagant intellectualism].
So here's how 3 blanks are settled:
i): Since "fringe" = "borderline", only B is possible.
ii): S defended his idea against its(the idea's) detractors, naturally.
iii): Since the second sentence is S's idea, S's assessment towards [intellectualism] is negative. Only "affront" is possible.
