The popular image was an offbeat. It was off the beat (not normal / unconventional) suggesting that blank two cannot take both "pedigree" and "epicenter". It has to be margins. For the first blank: it cannot be "cheerful", which can be fairly considered not offbeat. As far as the other options for blank one are considered: creative is more appropriate as the following sentence talks about central figure in science. Hence, a creative character at the margins of of both mainstream and avant-garde jazz - fits well. The last blank is straightforward as it claims "new" metaphorical - it is both new and metaphorical - which is restructured. "re-envision" fits the bill.
