You can wrestle with this quadratic equation if you want to, and factor it out, or even worse, use the quadratic formula, by why do so when we have answer choices? Plugging them in will take you less than 15 seconds total. Let's try:

A) -1 + 1 = 1 Not true. Out.
B) 0 + 0 = 1 Not true. Out.
C) 1/2 + 1/4 = 1 Not true. Out.
D) 1 + 1 = 1 Not true. Out.
E) Therefore, it has to be E.
