(3x – 2)(x + 1) = 0

So either (3x – 2)=0 or (x + 1) = 0

If 3x-2 =0, Solving for x gives 2/3
Solving for x in x+1 gives x= -1.

So x can have 2 values, 2/3 or -1. Only in these 2 cases the overall equation will be equal to zero.

As 1 > -2/3

Explanation

The expression on the left side of the equation will equal zero when either (3x – 2) = 0 or (x + 1) = 0.

Solving these equations yields $$x=\frac{2}{3}$$ or x = –1. The question asks you for the greatest value of x, so the answer is choice (C).
