Explanation

Starting from what we do know: even with today's more numerous and better roads and bridges, the woods and the river Meuse form a significant

This piece odf the statement clearly suggests you that the subject (in this case the Ardenne forest) is difficult to going through. So, we do need 3 words that suggest this overall.

The first one is impenetrable: difficult to enter in to the forest.

An unpropitious, which means a NON favorable, unpleasant place.

Actually, we do have today impediment to pass by, yet

The 'tightly' forested Ardennes hills have to look dense and hard to navigate thus our first option has to be impenetrable. The comma helps us as it indicates no change in the sentences tone, so we choose 'an unpropitious' which means 'an endeavour with little chance of success'. Then the sentence says that 'even with' modern roads the woods and the river pose a significant _______. We know the woods are dense and almost impenetrable, therefore they have to be a barrier. The only word similar to barrier is 'impediment'.

Therefore the answer is A,E, H

To the untutored eye is a rhetoric introduction to say that for those of who where NOT used to the forest , it looks like impenetrable and difficult to get in.

It is like when someone knows very well a mountain or a specific are and someone does not

That's the difference

To the untutored eye the tightly forested Ardennes hills around Sedan look quite (i)_____, (ii)_____place through which to advance a modem army, even with today's more numerous and better roads and bridges, the woods and the river Meuse form a significant (iii) _______.

The phrase "even with today's more numerous and better roads and bridges" has the same effect as "in spite of today's more..." and we can therefore complete the third blank as "the woods and the river Meuse form a significant barrier". Therefore, the word from the choice list will be impediment, which means obstacle or barrier.

Since we know that the woods present an impediment, it is a difficult place to advance a modern army, thus unpropitious is the right word from the choice list. The word unpropitious means unfavorable, not giving or indicating a good chance of success.

Now clearly, the only option for the first blank that will be compatible with the meaning of the rest of the sentence is going to be impenetrable.

Thus, the correct choices are A, E and H.

The "untutored" eye has no relevance to solving this question. If you replace it with "tutored eye", still the answers will be the same. You got trapped by something trivial and irrelevant to solving this TC triple blank.
