the answer choice has a negative meaning and in the same direct as enemies. so that narrows down to options d and e. Now the rest is dependent on vocab, but cynic is more widely learnt as one of the words in gre as someone who hates mankind, but this word is too extreme and hence e is our final answer.

We need a negative word and a one that is synonymous with enemies. That rules out the first 3 options. Cynics are people with a negative or optimistic attitude towards people. So, the "youth" having no particular cynics does not represent whether he moved in the best society or not. Because Cynic has no relation to moral or social activities.

Vice relates to immoral activities or a moral fault. This is closer to enemies. If the youth had no vices, then he probably moved in the best society.
