Explanation

Arrange the 11 numbers given in order, from least to greatest:
8, 8, 8, 8, 10, 10, 10, 10, 11, 12, 12

We still have to add y, but what is the median of this list?

Value of yListValue of Median
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8y, 8, 8, 8, 8, 10, 10, 10, 10, 11, 12, 1210
98, 8, 8, 8, y, 10, 10, 10, 10, 11, 12, 1210
108, 8, 8, 8, y, 10, 10, 10, 10, 11, 12, 1210
12, 13, ...8, 8, 8, 8, 10, 10, 10, 10, 11, 12, 12, y10

Hence irrespective of the value of y we have Median is 10.
