The greatest chance for the existence of extraterrestrial life is on a planet beyond our solar system. After all, the Milky Way galaxy alone contains 100 billion other suns, many of which could be accompanied by planets similar enough to Earth to make them suitable abodes of life.

The argument above assumes which of the following?

(A) Living creatures on another planet would probably have the same appearance as those on Earth.
(B) Life cannot exist on other planets in our solar system.
(C) If the appropriate physical conditions exist, life is an inevitable consequence.
(D) More than one of the suns in the galaxy is accompanied by an Earth-like planet.
(E) It is likely that life on another planet would require conditions similar to those on Earth.

(A) The argument mentions only "extraterrestrial life," making no comment whatsoever on their appearance. It talks about planets similar to earth, but not life forms similar to earth's.

(B) The argument says that the best chances are outside of our solar system, but it does not wholly discount the possibility of extraterrestrial life within our solar system.

(C) This choice may be correct if it said "possible consequence," but "inevitable" is far too strong. The argument says that life could exist on these other planets, not that it must exist there.

(D) The argument doesn't even say that one sun definitely has an earth-like planet. It only says that many suns could have an earth-like planet. Not that they do.

(E) This is the valid assumption. The argument hinges on earth-like planets. If life could exist on planets totally different, then the argument wouldn't stand anymore.
