The first step to all function questions is to follow the instructions and avoid the inclination to become intimidated. In this case, you most likely know how to find all of the necessary information to properly solve the problem, so simply be methodical and do not skip steps to arrive to the correct answer.

First, skip to the end of the problem to determine what is being sought to save time. In this case the problem seeks the value of f(3, 4) + g(3, 4).

Now, read the problem taking notes and completing obviously necessary calculations as you go.

As defined f(x, y) is equal to the average of x and y. So, go ahead and find the average of 3 and 4 by adding the values and dividing by two. Thus, the average of 3 and 4 or f(3, 4) = 3.5.

Next, as defined, g(x, y) is equal to the greater of the numbers. So, the g(3, 4) = 4.

Finally, sum the two values derived from the functions, 3.5 + 4, to arrive at the correct value of 7.5, which matches choice D.
