Ian rode the bus to work last year. His travel times to work were approximately normally distributed, with a mean of 35 minutes and a standard deviation of 5 minutes. According to the figure shown, approximately what percent of Ian’s travel times to work last year were less than 40 minutes?

Explanation

You should really focus on the question at stake

Which includes everything left of the 40-min mark on our bell curve.

$$34% + 34% + 14% + 2% = 84%$$

Given thet mean travel time is 35 mins and one standard deviation is 35 + 5 mins. or 35 - 5 mins.

So we mark the corresponding points onto the graph as shown below. Now the question asks for the percentage of time Ian was travelling less than 40 mins.

Clearly we are being aasked the value of the area shaded in blue. So the answer is E.

Add all the regions below +1 (cz that is 35 min + 5 min = 40 min)
so 34+34+14+2 = 84 %

In the GRE, would this be a mid level or hard question?
