I for one did not get any meaning of the clue however I was just my scrupulous in gleaning the option, I honed on to the right PAIR of words.

Dog whines and implores suggest that he was pleading or earnestly requesting which eventually made his appearance irritating.So, the correct pair of words are supplication and entreaty.

Entreaty and supplication both essentially mean to plea for something
