I will go with D.
In my opinion undermining is a strong negative word for this context. Identifying and limited seem more suitable for the argument.

Here in blank i, vitiate cannot be an option, although i am skeptical about blank ii. Can blank ii be expanded?
Consider this question
By equating scientific rigor with a quantitative approach, researchers in archaeology and cultural sciences often have __________ their scope to those narrowly circumscribed topics that can be studied by quantitative methods.
diminished
expanded
enlarged
limited
broadened
attributed

IMO both expanded and broadened are suitable, but the OA is A and D
