[Reveal] Spoiler: Answer and Explanation
(B) auspicious and (F) favorable are the correct answers.

The clues are “tentative, fearful”.

If his attempts to enter were tentative and fearful they hardly were promising. Two similar words to promising are (B) auspicious and (F) favorable.

The question states that his first foray was carried out with fearfulness and tentativeness. The part which needs to be concentrated is "hardly". Auspicious(b) and favorable(f) are those which follows "hardly" which has same meaning that that the foray has not favored him. Hence (a) and (f) is the answer. Unpropitious(d) and unheralded(a) both won't go with "hardly" since the result becomes positive because of double negation of "hardly and "un". Both commendable(c) and satisfactory(e) also goes well with the "hardly" but they have different meaning. Hence (b) and (f) is the answer.
