Let Adams current age be $$y$$.

If $$\frac{1}{2}x$$ years ago Adam was 12:

$$y -\frac{1}{2}x = 12$$

and $$\frac{1}{2}x$$ years from now he will be 2x years old

$$y+ \frac{1}{2}x = 2x$$

Solve for $$x$$ and $$y$$

x = 12 y= 18

how old will he be 3x years from now?

$$y + 3x = 18 + 3*12 = 54$$
