Explanation

The words “Rather than” indicate that the other critics, unlike Winship, think of the controversy as “fixed and structural.” Since both “dissolution” and “melding” of “intransigent opposing forces” would tend to lessen the controversy, only “collision” (Choice C) fits the first blank. The second and third blanks appear in a series of examples of such opposing forces; only “orthodox” contrasts with “radical” in the second blank and only “clerical” contrasts with “secular” in the third blank.

Thus, the correct answer is collision (Choice C), orthodox (Choice E), and clerical (Choice G).

TRICKY!!!

blank (i): Rather than viewing the Massachusetts Bay Colony’s antinomian controversy as the inevitable (i)________ of the intransigent opposing forces...
intransigent means unwavering/steadfast.
What might be inevitable when two opposing forces are unwavering/steadfast?
Perhaps some kind of disagreement/argument/fight
Check the answer choices....A and B don't make any sense, but C (collision) fits nicely.

blank (ii): .. . opposing forces of radical and (ii)________ beliefs...
What's the opposite of radical beliefs?
Non-radical? Mainstream?
Check the answer choices....D and F don't work, but E (orthodox) works.

blank (iii): .. . opposing forces of radical and orthodox beliefs, male and female piety, (iii)________ and secular power...
This last blank is still part of the list of opposing forces.
This time we need a word that is the opposite of secular
Well, secular means having no religious or spiritual basis.
So, the opposite would be something like religious
Check the answer choices....H and I don't work, but G (clerical) works.

ASIDE: while clerical is often associated with workplace activities, it also means related to the clergy.

Answer: C, E, G

Cheers,
Brent
