This question can be solved by focusing on following:-

1. WHILE- this is a sentence shifter, it shifts what will come latter in the text. Hence we must heed to the fact that "oriented toward a small audience of experts in the field" will be reversed-- which indeed happen "philosophers have made concerted efforts to write in a way that is understandable to a layperson."

so after reading all of the text one should have come up with his or her own word-- I came up with "arcane"- hard to understand.

2. NOTICE THE COMMA--" experts in the field, resulting in a profusion of ________ texts,"

Comma play two roles-- 1) can act as a sentece shifter just like WHILE or similar words-- as we can see here "resulting in a profusion of ________ texts," every thing which will come after the second comma will be opposite of the blank which is our clue for the bank.

2) It can act as a support of to same flow of the text - "experts in the field, resulting in a profusion of ________ " the blank in will be similar to the context before the first blank.

Hence the answer is A and D.
