Explanation

30 apples at 40 cents apiece cost \$12. Buying 30 apples at 3 per dollar would cost \$10. Therefore, the sale price is \$2 less than the normal price.

At regular price, 30 apples cost 30 x 0.40 = 12 dollars.

At the sale price, 30 apples cost 30 x 1/3 = 10 dollars.

So at the sale price, a total of 2 dollars is saved.

I figured the savings of the 3rd one by realizing that you save \$0.20 when you buy 3 at the sale price and multiplying the \$0.20 by 10 to equate to the 30 apples for a total savings of \$2. Will that strategy always work or did the numbers just work out well in this case?

REGULAR PRICE
At \$0.40 apiece, the cost of 30 apples = (30)(\$0.40) = \$12.00

REDUCED PRICE
At \$1.00 per THREE apples, each apple costs \$1.00/3
So, the cost of 30 apples = (30)(\$1.00/3) = \$10.00

\$12.00 - \$10.00 = \$2.00

Cheers,
Brent
