Psychological maladjustment in children is caused by the stress of the birthing process as is proved by the discovery of a positive relationship between the duration of the mother's labor and the amount of time the child spent crying in the first month of life.

Which of the following, if true, LEAST damages the author's assertion?

(A) There is no relationship between the amount of time spent crying and psychological maladjustment.
(B) Behavior indicative of psychological maladjustment does not appear until the third month of a child's life.
(C) From the infant's point of view, hurried labor is more stressful than a gradual, slow delivery.

Psychological maladjustment in children is caused by the stress of the birthing process as is proved by the discovery of a positive relationship between the duration of the mother's labor and the amount of time the child spent crying in the first month of life.

The argument tells us that the maladjustment in children is the result of a strong relationship between a long birthing process and the cries in the first month.

We do need the answer which has a MINOR impact on this implication or I.E is neutral to the argument

(A) There is no relationship between the amount of time spent crying and psychological maladjustment.

Pretty clear. No relationship we do have. So this option demolishes the argument. Good

(B) Behavior indicative of psychological maladjustment does not appear until the third month of a child's life.

This weaken the argument. In the first month, we do have nothing conclusive. The statement is NOT true. Good

(C) From the infant's point of view, hurried labor is more stressful than a gradual, slow delivery.

This is also good. Moreover this is the most tricky. We focused on the duration of labor but if we do know that short one is NOT stressful for the baby, then the argument has impacted

(D) The estimates of the duration of labor were based on obstetricians' estimates of the time of the onset of labor.

This is neutral: the estimation of the labor was based on an estimation which is not our concern. Wrong

(E) The infants who have experienced the greatest stress during birth are often too weak to cry for extended periods of time.

This weakens the argument for sure

Hope this helps

Oh, So you mean Option D damages the assertion the least because it is irrelevant to the main point of the RC? So, neither strengthens nor weakens the assertion.
