One of the world's most celebrated paintings, The Man with the Golden Helmet, long attributed to Rembrandt, is not a Rembrandt after all. So say several art experts, who base their conclusion on an analysis of stylistic features, especially details both of shading and of brushwork. In order to ascertain who really painted the well-known masterpiece, the experts have begun a series of sophisticated new tests, including one that involves the activation of neutrons. These tests yield patterns for any painter that are as distinctive as a good set of fingerprints.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the conclusion of the art experts depends?

(A) The Man with the Golden Helmet was riot painted during Rembrandt's lifetime.
(B) If even The Man with the Golden Helmet is of questionable attribution, then any supposedly authentic Rembrandt has now become suspect.
(C) The painting known as The Man with the Golden Helmet is a copy of a Rembrandt original.
(D) The original ascription of The Man with the Golden Helmet to Rembrandt was a deliberate fraud.
(E) There are significant consistencies among authentic Rembrandts in certain matters of style.

(A) I believe "riot" should be "not," but the art experts are simply saying that Rembrandt didn't paint it. Any of his contemporaries easily could have though.

(B) We have no reason to believe that The Man with the Golden Helmet is special among Rembrandt's paintings in any way, so we can't justify the word even before it. The art experts speak of this painting only, not any of Rembrandt's other works.

(C) This may or may not be true. In either case, the current Man with the Golden Helmet is not painted by Rembrandt, and that's all the art experts are worried about.

(D) The word "deliberate" implies that we know the intentions behind the original ascription. Even if it is a fraud, we have no idea whether the mistake was accidental or on purpose. The art experts aren't worried about this either: they only worry about the authenticity of the painting, not the intentions behind it.

(E) Clearly the best answer. If all of Rembrandt's paintings had completely different styles, then it means nothing to say that The Man with the Golden Helmet has a different style. Rather, this particular painting has to be unique among Rembrandt's other works. The art experts are claiming it is unique because the style is not the same as other Rembrandts.
