One month Mary used \(\frac{1}{6}\) of her monthly salary for a car payment and \(\frac{1}{4}\) more than the car payment for rent. What fraction of her monthly salary did Mary use that month for the car payment and rent combined?
A. \(\frac{5}{24}\)
B. \(\frac{3}{8}\)
C. \(\frac{5}{12}\)
D. \(\frac{1}{2}\)
E. \(\frac{7}{12}\)
Here,
Let's take the total Salary as = 24 (since it is divisible by both 6 and 4)
Now the first part,
\(\frac{1}{6}\) of salary = \(\frac{1}{6}\) * 24 = 4
Now, she uses 1/4 more than the car payment for Rent i.e = \(\frac{1}{4} * 4 = 1\)
Total rent paid = \(1 + 4 = 5\)
Combination of both rent and car payment =\(5 + 4 = 9\)
Therefore, fraction of her monthly salary did Mary use that month for the car payment and rent combined = \(\frac{9}{24} = \frac{3}{8}\)
