MS in CS at age 30 [#permalink]
27 May 2016, 10:28
Hi Guys, I'm 30 and I'm interested in pursuing my masters in CS. How big is the age factor? I have been working as a Lead Software developer in an MNC.
Reasons for MS:
1). Pursue research. May go for PhD. after MS. 2). Move to US. 3). My work no longer requires research and I want to do reseach in AI/Machine Learnng(FYI, My current job profile is quite different from AI.)
What do you think are my chances? Genuine responses appreciated.
Thanks
Regards Tarun

Hi @Carcass Thanks for your reply. I'm an Indian software engineer working with an MNC in India. I completed my bachelors of engineering in Information Technology 8 years ago from one of the top institutes of India with a grade percentage of 68.9%(not sure about how to convert it in GPA). I have looked through programs on Machine Learning at CMU and Berkeley so far and they are on top of my list. My job profile is nowhere close to my area of interest for M.S. However, I'm taking courses through coursera/edx and taking part in competitions and that's how I developed interest in data science and machine learning. I'm not sure if that would be enough as a reasonable SOP. For now, I want to pursue masters in this area but might go for PhD if I think I would want to dig deeper. For now my plan after masters is to take up a job in US as a data scientist.

Well, your resume looks fine but the best advice I can give you based on my experience is to pick a pool of schools, see the criteria they want and whether they fit with what you wanna do, square all the stuff and see if you can go. see my post here guides-and-resources-for-a-ph-d-in-business-1007.htmlit is for business schools and not for engineer but the info you can find in it; i.e. repositories for papers, how to do a SOP and so on are the same. Hope this helps. regards

Thanks Carcass. The reason I asked this question is that I wanted to know how schools look at the age factor? Is it really uncommon for a person to go for MS at age 30?

But the adcom should never have an age bias. Examinig, your application they look what you could bring to the University and program, no more. As such, your age should not be your real concern. regards

Hi, mee too experienced similar situation. But from what I know, the main problem is to do the GRE and TEOFL tests, in which for non-english speaker, it is quite difficult.

I think that nowadays the age factor doesn't matter at all. Anyone is able to do anything he wants, and if one decided to change his profession, I think, nothing is impossible. Moreover, if you have some relevant experience, you can get a PhD without even getting MS. The only thing you should improve is your sop for ms in cs, as it matters really a lot while the application process. The best way is to ask a professional writer, who already has phd, to do it for you. In this case, your admission will more definitely be successful.
