The key to this question lies in the first part of the sentence – “a distinctive sense of beauty”. We need something that links to “beauty”. The only option is “aesthetics”. Methodologies and intellect are too similar to logic, and provide no connection with beauty. Obligation also does not connect with beauty. Another way to express caprice is to say “on a whim”. Again there is no connection to “beauty”. Process of elimination can be used, or the direct approach of linking beauty with aesthetics.

I assume you mean to elaborate the five answer choices. A caprice can be thought of as a sudden change of mood. Aesthetics is concerned with a sense of beauty. An obligation is something you must do. A methodology is a method. Intellect is to do with the mind. From these explanations you can probably see that to connect with the “beauty” mentioned in the first part of the sentence, only “aesthetics” is possible. There must be that connection with “beauty”; otherwise the first part of the sentence would not be connected to the second part.

Mathematicians have a distinctive sense of beauty: they strive to present their ideas and results in a clear and compelling fashion, dictated by (i) __________ as well as by logic.

The sentence begins by stating that mathematicians have a distinctive sense of beauty. This statement is then elaborated after the colon, where their presentation of ideas and results are said to be dictated by __________ as well as logic. Clearly since their beauty is being elaborated on, the word for the blank should be aesthetics, which is the branch of philosophy which deals with questions of beauty and artistic taste. The other element of their presentation is of course logic, and that is explicitly stated.
