the answer must be $506 if the overtime pay is half of the regular pay(typo error in question- 11/2 times given), as 40*(11.5) + 8*0.5*11.5 = 506

I found the question confusing. If she earns $11.5 per hour in regular time then for working 40 hours she earns $460. If she earns 5.5 times $11.5 per hour in overtime then after after working 8 hours of working overtime, she earns $506. So in total she earns $460 + $506 = $966.

Where am I being wrong in understanding the question?

Fixed! The over time pay is not \(\frac{11}{2}=5.5\) but \(1\frac{1}{2}=1.5\).

Total pay= regular pay +overtime pay = (regular rate) * regular time + (overtime rate)* overtime time= \(11.5 \times 40 + 11.5 \times 1.5 \times 8= 598\)
The answer is indeed E.
