Pretty easy question.

The thing appeared not so good when a platoon was on the horizon and the hostages were happy.

The first blank needs to be filled with a word that means 'group.' All three choices have this in common, but 'platoon' fits best as it denotes a military unit. The second blank should be a positive word, to evoke the feeling that hostages would feel at being saved, so 'delighted' is the best option.
