Why the answer is A)? There is nothing given related to the word crossfire

I would say that although interplay could be put into the sentence, crossfire is the answer that makes the most sense. "caught in the crossfire" is a common phrase, and the word "caught" precedes the first blank. That is why I chose crossfire.
