Given: y = 12x – 17

The least integer x for which y is greater than 100 is
So, we want: y > 100

Replace y with 12x – 17 to get: 12x – 17 > 100
Add 17 to both sides of the inequality to get: 12x > 117
Divide both sides by 12 to get: x > 117/12
No need to grab your calculator!
Since 108/12 = 9 and since 120/12 = 10, we know that 117/12 = 9.something

So we get: x > 9.something

Since x must be an INTEGER, the smallest possible value of x is 10

Answer: D
