Given $$x^2 = 16$$, $$x = \pm 4$$. Thus, we cannot say which quantity is unequivocally greater than the other because it depends on which value x takes.

since the question explicitly does not give a square root symbol taking a square root of 16 could result in +ve or -ve 4
