Explanation

Here we have the expression $$\frac{a-b}{a+b} = 2$$ and also given that $$b=1$$.

Putting value of b in the expression.

$$\frac{a-b}{a+b} = 2$$

or $$\frac{a-1}{a+1} = 2$$ or $$a-1 = 2a + 2$$ or $$a = -3$$.

Hence E is the correct option.

If b = 1, let's first replace b with 1 to get: (a - 1)/(a + 1) = 2
Multiply both sides of the equation by (a+1) to get: a - 1 = 2(a + 1)
Simplify: a - 1 = 2a + 2
Subtract a from both sides: -1 = a + 2
Subtract 2 from both sides: -3 = a
