Explanation

An Algebra question with numbers as answer choices and the phrase "which of the following could be a value of x" is a perfect candidate for substituting.

If x = –11

$$4x + 3 > -13$$
$$4(-11) + 3 > -13 ..... -44 + 3 > -13 ...... -41 > -13$$ NOT CORRECT

If x = –9

$$4x + 3 > -13$$
$$4(-9) + 3 > -13 ..... -36 + 3 > -13 ...... -33 > -13$$NOT CORRECT

If x = –8

$$4x + 3 > -13$$
$$4(-8) + 3 > -13 ..... -32 + 3 > -13 ...... -29 > -13$$NOT CORRECT

If x = –5

$$4x + 3 > -13$$
$$4(-5) + 3 > -13 ..... -20 + 3 > -13 ...... -17 > -13$$NOT CORRECT

If x = –3

$$4x + 3 > -13$$
$$4(-3) + 3 > -13 ..... -12 + 3 > -13 ...... -9 > -13$$CORRECT

Hence option E is correct.

E) —3

Given: 4x + 3 > —13
Subtract 3 from both sides to get: 4x > —16
Divide both sides by 4 to get: x > —4

If x is GREATER THAN -4, x cannot equal -11 or -9 or -8 or -5
-3 is the only answer choice that is GREATER THAN -4
