How to improve gre score especially verbal !!! [#permalink] New post 23 Jun 2020, 06:17
I took gre practice test (ETS powerprep 1) yesterday to gauge my baseline score and scored 317 (q170 v147) where verbal was very poor as english isn't my first language. I gave kaplan practice test as well after that and scored 318 (q170 v148).

I have about 8 months for my gre exam and I want to master verbal section but don't know what resources would be perfect for it. Critical reasoning part I can do myself, it is at about 80% accuracy, the problem mainly lies with vocabulary and sentence related questions.

Any help with the best possible resources will be appreciated with the target verbal score of 165.

A couple of things I'd recommend:

1) Vocabulary is key. The way vocabulary is tested over the years has changed a bit, but it's still a fundamental part of the test. Whether you use flashcards, word lists, or an app, be methodical about vocabulary practice. Spend 20-30 minutes a day if you can, then review new words at the end of each week. I'd also spend time reviewing some of the Greek and Latin word roots, as those can be very helpful. Here's one such list:

And have a look at this blog for a good hi-frequency vocab list

2) While vocabulary should always be in the background, dedicate a set amount of time (whether daily or weekly) to practice. A big part of doing well in the GRE is recognizing and anticipating the types of questions that may be asked, and recognizing how those words are used in sentences. For general practice questions, there are a host of excellent resources--this site is an excellent one! And any of the well-known test-prep companies have good resources/books available: Official Guide, Kaplan, Barrons, Magoosh, etc. For hardcopy resources, I recommend having a copy of the Official Guide as well as one of the other, more strategy-oriented guides.

Hope that helps start things off, and good luck!
