Question Stats:

0% (00:00) correct 100% (00:48) wrong based on 2 sessions
Need help with the answer than the answer can't be determined, the only explanation on the test is that the answer is D:

A ship captain sails 500 miles due south and then 1,200 miles due east

Quantity A
Quantity B
1350 miles
The minimum number of miles
the captain must sail to return
to his original position


Quantity A is greater.
Quantity B is greater.
The two quantities are equal.
The relationship cannot be determined from information given.

This question is from the following Princeton Review book: https://books.google.ca/books?id=bkXBRM ... 22&f=false

The question appears on page 430 (question #7), and the correct answer (A) is given on page 441

This should make sense to us, since the two legs of the trip create a right triangle.
The missing side is the hypotenuse, so we can write:
500² + 1200² = (missing side)²

Solve this equation to get: missing side = 1300
In other words, 1300 is the minimum number of miles the captain must sail to return to his original position

Answer: A
