Explanation

Sometimes a seeming theme trap (evolving) is not a trap — this sentence is literally about evolution, and also uses evolving as a metaphor. Fallacious and counterfactual is an incorrect pair that reflects misunderstanding the sentence, which certainly doesn’t say that all science is wrong, just that it is its nature to constantly revise in the face of new information.

Hence options evolving, advancing are correct!

The key words here are BELIEVED and PROVED

So, in the past anthropologists BELIEVED one thing, but now that science has advanced, anthropologists KNOW that thing is not true.

In other words, the science is getting better. It's IMPROVING.

Let's predict IMPROVING for the blank.

Check the answer choices.... B and D fit nicely with the prediction.

Answer: B & D

ASIDE: Many people will be drawn to E (VACILLATING), but this suggests that science can go from BELIEVING to KNOWING and also from KNOWING to BELIEVING. However, there are no contextual clues to back this up.

Cheers,
Brent
