Mode means in a set of data values the value that appears most often

Now for the set 2x, x + 5, 3x − 2, 5x − 7, and 4x

Consider x= 2 , we have

4 , 9, 4, 3, 8

Consider x= 3 , we have

6, 8, 7, 8, 12

Consider x= 4 , we have

8, 9, 10, 13, 16

Consider x= 5 , we have

10, 10, 13, 22, 20

Consider x= 7 , we have

14, 12, 19, 28, 28

Thus mode is 4; when x= 2.

Explanation

Remember that mode means the number that appears “most often.” Plug In the Answers. For choice (C), if x = 4, then the numbers become: 8, 9, 10, 13, 16.

For a list of numbers to have a mode, there has to be at least two of one of the numbers. So this list has no mode; eliminate choice (C). For choice (A), if x = 2, then the numbers become: 4, 7, 4, 3, 8.

Because 4 appears twice, 4 is the mode—the answer is choice A.
