ETS GRE Test Dates

For Paper-based Tests, ETS offers only 3 dates per year when you can take the test. Yes, it is only 3 days a year. Here are the dates for 2017-2018 application season:

  • Oct 7, 2017
  • Nov 4, 2017
  • Feb 3, 2018
You can find the full listing of countries that have the paper-based test here. Most applicants prefer the computer format, and most take the computer-based GRE.

Our recommendation is that you take the computer-based GRE test since you have the flexibility to schedule your test at any time (as long as there is an open slot at the test center). You can also retest every 3 weeks and improve your score if your first attempt does not go as planned. Moreover, most books are actually written and optimized for a computer-based GRE strategy. There are many more tests and resources available for the computer-based test as well.

The only reason you would consider taking the paper version is if you live in a country where a computer-based test is not offered and cannot travel to take it in a better location. FYI - if you are traveling, make sure you research and bring the proper identification with you to the test center. Usually the passport from your native country will always work. Keep in mind that some forms of identification may be acceptable within the country to its citizens (e.g. US driver's license is OK to use for US citizens but it is not accepted for International test takers in the US; they must use their passport even if they have a US Driver's license). In any case, if you end up taking a paper test, make sure you start studying about 4 months before the date you intend to take the test.

Good Luck!
