The blank here should be opposite of artlessness, so cunning fits well

Early critics of Emily Dickinson's poetry mistook for simple mindedness the surface of artlessness that in fact she constructed with such (i) _______.

artlessness = guilelessness

The TC uses the idiom mistook A for B (thought that A was B), but implemented as mistook for B, A.

Now if "early critics of Emily Dickinson" - Critics - who are expected to know the subject of their study (Emily Dickinson) and be competent enough to judge it, mistook the surface of artlessness for simple mindedness, well then she must have constructed it very cleverly.

Thus cunning is the correct choice.

The first critics of her work had a misunderstanding, they went completely off road.

The fact that in appearance the novel was without an apparent sort of art, then who pointed out the critics thought that the novel itself was absent of substantial meaning.

However, in the end, this was the only appearance because the novel and who wrote it did in such a cunning or smart or astute way.

In brief: on the surface the novel did look stupid but in the end it was very well written, profound, and a capolavoro !!!

Hope this helps
