HiHi please look at the intent of the sentence because of word despite it has a meaning that it was problematic or something like that still gave uplifting experience

I think it's the fact that it says "despite" and having a political position is a hard thing to get.

This is exactly correct. The definition of rigors is "the difficult and unpleasant conditions or experiences that are associated with something."

So DESPITE the unpleasant conditions being in the Diplomatic Corps ends up being an uplifting experience.

Even if you do not know the definition of rigors you can get this through process of elimination. The other words are perhaps more common and none of them are what we need in an answer (something that is basically the opposite of an uplifting experience).
