No other contemporary poet’s work has such a well-earned reputation for (i)_________, and there are few whose moral vision is so imperiously unsparing. Of late, however, the almost belligerent demands of his severe and densely forbidding poetry have taken an improbable turn. This new collection is the poet’s fourth book in six years — an ample output even for poets of sunny disposition, let alone for one of such (ii)_________ over the previous 50 years. Yet for all his newfound (iii)_________, his poetry is as thorny as ever.

Blank (i)Blank (ii)Blank (iii)
A. patent accessibilityD. penitential austerityG. taciturnity
B. intrinsic frivolityE. intractable prolixityH. volubility
C. near impenetrabilityF. impetuous prodigalityI. pellucidity

Explanation

Since the author of the paragraph has described the poet’s reputation as “well-earned,” the correct completion for Blank (i) must be something that is consistent with what the rest of the passage says about the poet’s work. Only “near impenetrability” fulfills this requirement, since the next sentence tells us that the poet’s work is “severe” and “densely forbidding,” which rule out both accessibility and frivolity. The Blank (ii) completion must contrast with “ample output,” and of the available options, only “penitential austerity” does so. Finally, the word in Blank (iii), since it is preceded by “new found,” must refer to the change that has occurred in the poet’s work.
The change the paragraph has described is an increase in output, so “volubility” is the correct choice.

Thus the correct answer is near impenetrability (Choice C), penitential austerity (Choice D), and volubility (Choice H).

Is the first part of first sentence and the second part of it is concerned with the same poet?

Does "let alone " pivot, contrast "an ample output". I am not clear if "let alone" is contrasting. Can you clarify?

Honestly, I have rarely seen a question like this. It is really difficult to grasp. Actually. someone could say: what is the phrase talking about ???

In the end, the question says more or less the following: his poetry (of the author) usually is dark, it is inaccessible in its unfolding. I.E what he writes is really arcane. However, lately, this approach is more soft than before. thanks to his sunny attitude. Nonetheless, even under this new configuration, his writing is STILL tough to grasp.

Ample output refers to the fourth book. Instead, “even for ...let alone for,” is a contrast to emphasize the surprising result on that fourth book. And it is not in contrast to ample out, it reinforces it.

Is more clear now ?? any other doubt ??
