Explanation

To compare |m + 25| with 25 – m, first note that because the absolute value of any quantity is greater than or equal to 0, it must be true that |m + 25| ≥ 0 for all values of m. But you know that 25 – m is less than 0 when m is greater than 25. So Quantity A is greater than Quantity B when m > 25.

On the other hand, both |m + 25| and 25 – m are equal to 25 when m = 0. So in one case Quantity A is greater than Quantity B, and in the other case the two quantities are equal. Thus the correct answer is Choice D.

If m = 0, we get both expressions as equal. For other values of m we get other relations. Hence D

Quantity A: |m + 25|
Quantity B: 25 - m

Let's test some values of m.

If m = 0, we get:
Quantity A: |0 + 25|
Quantity B: 25 - 0

Evaluate:
Quantity A: |25|
Quantity B: 25
These quantities are EQUAL, so the correct answer is either C or D

Try a different value for m
If m = 1, we get:
Quantity A: |1 + 25|
Quantity B: 25 - 1

Evaluate:
Quantity A: |26|
Quantity B: 24
These quantities are NOT EQUAL, so the correct answer is D

It's quite simple. And it doesn't require any written calculation.
Just think, if m positive, then Quantity A greater always. But if m is 0, then both quantities become equal.

Thus, Choice D correct.

For these type of problems, my instinct is to try a negative, a fractional negative, 0, fractional positive, and finally a positive. I'm sure this is a waste of time.

Any recommendations on when the above is necessary vs. when you can do this more straightforward?

from my experience, just when firstly encounter this kind of questions, try to find shortcuts, see whether it is possible to apply all the concepts you have learnt to the question. Like leave plugging the numbers as the last option for the questions like this. As the above post shows, first you can conclude that absolute value should only equal to 0 or above, so that's the first concept we applied. Then you are more confident in plugging numbers, if it's the last option.
