A. 10 B. 15 C. 20 D. 30 E. 60
Take the task of creating a meal and break it into stages.
Stage 1: Select 3 different ingredients for the stew Since the order in which we select the 3 different ingredients does not matter, we can use combinations. We can select 3 ingredients from 5 ingredients in 5C3 ways (10 ways) So, we can complete stage 1 in 10 ways Aside: The 2nd video below has tips on calculating combinations like 5C3 in your head
Stage 2: Select a side dish (bread, salad, or dumplings) for the stew There are 3 options for the side dish, we can complete stage 2 in 3 ways
By the Fundamental Counting Principle (FCP), we can complete the 2 stages (and thus create a mean) in (10)(3) ways (= 30 ways)
Answer: D
Note: the FCP can be used to solve the MAJORITY of counting questions on the GRE. So, be sure to learn it.
