“At first” foreshadows contrast. The author found the person’s “gravity rather intimidating”…. BUT, as they “saw more”, they found ________ something else “very near the surface.”

We’re essentially finding an analogy to: first vs. now and gravity is intimidating vs. not grave… better yet, not serious.

Looking at the choices, the only positive (opposite to gravity as intimidating) options are confidence and laugher. Reading back into the sentence, "laughter" is a better contrast than confidence.

Found her gravity means found her seriousness. Now use of "but" is indication of opposite direction of a sentence. Opposite of gravity or seriousness should be laughter

Gravity can't means seriousness or the answer won't make sense. At first I found her "seriousness" intimidating but the more I got to know her______ the word must match with whether gravity means. Thus gravity is laughter. The word that is very tricky in the sentence.
