As expected from MGRE, a good and difficult question (at least for me)

At first, a still-life painting can appear quite (i)____________ , its focus on such everyday objects as flowers or fruits apparently uninspired
Here, painting is explained as everyday object, uninspired. This is a negative connotation. Banal (overfamiliar) is the best choice. Vital is kinda opposite. Luxuriant is irrelevant.

In the hands of (ii)____________ painter, however, careful attention to slight shifts of color and texture can lead to a truly (iii)____________ and exemplary painting.
The trigger word "however" will explain some contrast. The painting, in the hands of good painter, can be a good painting. Gauche (lack social polish) is opposite. Ascetic (a person who dedicate himself as a hermit) is irrelevant. Adept (skillful) fits best.
The result of adept painter is truly great, divine painting. Prosaic (dull, common) is opposite. Unstinting (I think it is prodigal) is irrelevant. Sublime (supreme or outstanding) fits best.

hope it helps
