Explanation

As the words “can occasionally” and “but typically” indicate, the missing word describes an investigation that contrasts with a “search in a definite direction.” Among the answer choices, only “unguided” provides a contrasting description; none of the other choices suggests an appropriate contrast.
Thus the correct answer is unguided (Choice B).

i fell for the trap answer consistent because I did not concentrate on the clue words - “can occasionally” and “but typically”

The key here lies in the phrase, 'but typically'. The sentence says that finding notable facts is usually a result of searching in a definite direction. So our blank must have the opposite, the only word that works is Unguided.

Therefore we choose (B)
