Among men older than 54, the labor force participation rate has actually been rising for the past couple of decades, reversing an old trend. That alarms some observers, who argue that it is another sign of (i) ______ —that men are being forced out of retirement or have been unable to retire in the first place. But this increase has been (ii)______ among the best-educated and highest-earning workers, often men who are staying on the job less for a paycheck than for (iii)______ stimulation, camaraderie, and other intangible benefits.

Blank (i) Blank (ii) Blank (iii)
distress attenuated worldly
senility concentrated piquant
tapering aggravated mental

Kudos for the right answer and explanation

That alarms some observer... this sentence has a somewhat negative connotation, so for blank (i) distress fits perfectly. For the third blank, the word has to be consistent with intangible benefits, so out of the choices' available mental is the best option. The hint for blank 2, is in the sentence "among the best-educated and highest-earning workers", the sentence doesn't mention what this group's participation in the labour force was before the trend was reversed. So, we can rule out both aggravated and attenuated. Hence, concentrated is the best choice.
