Although the revelation that one of the contestants was a friend left the judge open to charges of lack of ______, the judge remained adamant in her assertion that acquaintance did not necessarily imply______.
(A) prudence .. tolerance
(B) detachment .. foreknowledge
(C) exoneration .. impropriety
(D) prejudice .. preference
(E) disinterestedness .. partiality

Can someone explain? I was confused by one of the contestants was a friend, I suppose this friend is not the judge's friend and understood this friend as the friend of one of the defendants or plaintiff? Because of this confusion, I chose wrong answer. Please help

What was your answer? Regardless of whose friend this acquaintance is, I would still pick E.

I chose A but wavered E. Can you please explain why did you choose?
I searched for definition of the word "contestant" for a little bit and found out that in the legal term, it may bear some other meaning. Under the legal context of this question. There are two teams: defense & prosecution teams, the word "contestant" seems to point out to an attorney supports either one of those two teams, so "contestant" would mean a friend of a judge. I can be wrong and would like to listen to other responses if any

I think you're right that this contestant refers to the judge's friend. The main idea this sentence is trying to convey that having found out that this defendant or accused is actually judge's friend, doesn't not impair his or her decision making. And specifically by that means the judge is asserting that his friendship won't imply any biases or impartiality. The first blank should be similar to impartiality because of the "lack of" before the blank. Hence, disinterestedness is the answer.

The problem with A is that tolerance doesn't work in the second blank. It seems to say that the judge will not tolerate his friend (do we know if their friend is a culprit?). But that's not the sentence is trying to convey.
