Although the human population around the forestland in Middlesex County has increased, the amount of forestland has not been reduced. Therefore, the decrease in the county's songbird population cannot be attributed to the growth 'in the county's human population.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the conclusion above?

(A) As the human population of Middlesex County has grown, there has been an increase in the number of shopping malls built.
(B) The presence of more garbage cans resulting from the increase in the county's human population ensures the survival of more raccoons, which prey on songbird eggs whenever available.
(C) There has recently been a decrease in the amount of rain-forest land in Central and South America, where songbirds spend the winter months.
(D) Although several species of songbirds are disappearing from Middlesex County, these species are far from being endangered.
(E) The disappearance of songbirds, which eat insects, often results in increased destruction of trees by insects.

This one highlights the option of alternate conclusion that it is not because of because of human population but raccoons. Anyhow, official explanation please.

(A) We can't assume that shopping malls have any effect on the songbird population either way.

(B) This one says definitely that there are for sure more raccoons now. Since they eat songbird eggs, they are directly responsible for the decline in songbird population. And while the racoons are immediately responsible, the increase in human population was responsible for the increase in racoons.

(C) Even if there was a decrease in rain-forest land, there could still be plenty: a decrease is not the same as a shortage.

(D) This has nothing to do with the cause of the decrease in songbird population.

(E) Notice that this choice says "often" results in the destruction of trees. So we don't know if there will or will not be any decrease in trees. This choice also doesn't say anything about why the songbird population decreased.
