Explanation

The movie, even though is not perfect, had the virtue to improve the debate and the consideration of the cinema as art and as a tool a way to reflect on a certain argument.

We need to similar words

beholden
: indebted

A and B are the winner.

Why not C and D? Also, the answer by ETS is B and C! :(

You need a word/s that show how the film created in 1940 is, after all, a milestone and the films of today must give credits to it .

As such, the films of today are in debt with it.

Hope this helps.

There is nothing in the sentence to indicate that new films are derived, based, or necessarily even use it at all when making their movies. While derivative and based on do indeed have similar meanings, the actual sentence is: "since its release in 1940 provoked sufficient critical discussion to enhance the intellectual respectability of cinema considerably." This says nothing about actually using the film to make better films, but it DOES say that the film ENHANCED THE INTELLECTUAL RESPECTABILITY OF CINEMA. The respectability of cinema means that this film being talked about did something positive for how cinema was viewed as a whole, thus, there is a debt of gratitude owed to the movie, despite it not being a perfect film (another hint that it is not C/D as well). Beholden and indebted both mean "to owe a debt to" and so the answer is A and B.

I chose B and C....still unsure why derivative is not an answer.
