here the intended meaning is not that a certain product was already standard when it was created.
But it was the result of the same process to produce the paper. The difference is that here you see through it. As such, the solution for the very first balnk is diaphanous = see through.

Jacques E. Brandenberger invented a product which is more of a plastic film (plastic films are usually not opaque i.e. diaphanous)

Originally Jacques wanted to invent plastic coat fabric instead he ended up creating plastic film like paper, which is more useful than plastic fiber coat, and the usefulness of the product is visible/ immediately apparent and an ubiquitous(can be used almost in all places) product was found.
