I like this question.

if actual events in the history of life on Earth are accidental, then their probability of happening would vary. Hence, they could have one "possibility" among millions. Yet indicates a contrast, and it has to be opposite of the idea presented in the prior sentence. If events are accidental means that they are not derived on logic, so that means the blank should be close to logic; hence, rationally makes sense.

D was somewhat close, but the second blank won't fit uniquely.

I don't understand why D cannot be right. Th events are possibilities in millions but still can be understood uniquely
